Eighth-Born Luna Chapter 116

Chapter 116

Declan’s POV

She’s playing you.” My wolf’s voice drifted through my mind as we navigated the mountain paths.

I watched Emily out of the corner of my eye. She was doing her best to look casual, but she was memorizing everything–the guard posts, the tunnel mouths, the way the ground sloped.

Smart girl. Far smarter than she wanted me to know.

A slow smile pulled at my mouth.

“I know,” I answered.

My wolf gave a mental huff. And you’re letting her.

I looked at Emily again. I loved the way she tried to bury the fire in her eyes, though it leaked out anyway. The rebellion, the pure desperation, the flickering hope–it was all there. She was stunning when she was this close to the edge.

“Life is a game,” I told him. “And games lose their flavor when the other player stops trying to win.”

My wolf let out a low, amused growl. You enjoy watching her struggle.

A dark laugh nearly broke out of me.

“Of course I do.”

I slowed my pace, falling half a step behind her. I watched the way she moved, the way her shoulders stayed tense despite her efforts to look relaxed.

“Watching a little bird slam itself against the cage until its wings break?” My gaze drifted over the back of her neck, right where my mark sat. “That’s the only part that matters.”

And the worst thing?

Part of me already knew, I’d probably tear the entire world apart the second she actually stopped fighting.

Emily’s POV

The deeper parts of the rogue territory looked nothing like the castle. Here, the mountains were sharper, like jagged teeth against the sky, and the wind carried a biting chill that felt personal.

We eventually reached a massive black mountain at the edge of the inner valley. A dark opening waited at its

base. A mine – or at least, that’s what it looked like from the outside.

Declan stopped at the entrance and gave a lazy wave toward the dark. “After you, little wolf.”

:20 pm PTM

Rogue guards followed us with torches, their flames dancing against the stone. The deeper we went, the more the air changed. It started to hum, a low vibration that I could feel in my teeth.

The tunnel finally opened up, and I froze.

The cavern was massive an endless abyss that looked like the earth had been hollowed out centuries ago. Glowing crystal formations covered the walls in every direction, casting a silver and blue light through the dark like stars trapped underground. At the very bottom sat a giant circular lake of shimmering crystal, forming a perfect,

glowing ring.

It looked ancient. It looked wrong. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

“What is this?” I asked.

Declan didn’t answer right away. He watched me, studying the way I looked at the cavern. He was waiting to see if I’d be afraid or if I’d be fascinated. Fascination won, and I hated myself for it.

“It’s a portal,” he finally said.

I turned to him, my brow furrowing. “A portal?”

Declan smiled. “How else did you think we traveled between territories so quickly?” He started down a carved tone pathway leading toward the bottom. “The rogues don’t leave scent trails because most of the time…” He ooked back over his shoulder at me. “We never cross the land at all.”

A spark lit up in my chest. A portal. That meant a way out. It meant a door that could lead me straight back to

Nathan.

Declan’s eyes sharpened. He saw the shift in my expression instantly.

“Oh,” he murmured. “That reaction was interesting.”

Damn him. He saw everything. I forced my face to go neutral, trying to hide the hope that was suddenly hammering against my ribs.

“I saw symbols like these in the library,” I said, trying to sound like I was just curious. “How does it work?”

Declan actually looked pleased that I was asking. “The crystals generate and stabilize the energy. Centuries ago, vitches had to use their own lives to create these paths.”

I looked at the glowing stones with a new sense of dread.

“They died doing it,” he continued, his tone casual. “It usually took five powerful witches just to keep one rossing stable.”

I stared at the massive crystal lake below. “And now?”

“Now?” His smile widened. “Now the crystals do most of the work.”

“That’s why the raids started happening so often?” I asked but I really don’t need the answer.

So that was it.

Phat was how they appeared out of nowhere and vanished before the packs could even shift. That was how entire packs were wiped out overnight. The realization made my stomach turn.

We finally reached the edge of the crystal lake. Up close, the glowing stones were massive–some taller than

trees. They hummed with a low, constant energy that vibrated through the soles of my boots.

And suddenly, I wanted one. I needed one.

If these crystals were what kept the portal stable, could they be used to tear it apart?

A rogue approached Declan, leaning in to whisper something urgent. For one precious heartbeat, Declan’s focus

shifted. That was my only chance.

I stepped toward the cavern wall, my fingers brushing against a smaller cluster of crystals. They were ice–cold and buzzing. I glanced back–Declan was still listening to the guard.

I gripped a shard and twisted.

Crack.

The sound felt like a gunshot in the cavern, but the guards didn’t look up. A small, jagged piece broke loose into ny palm. Adrenaline flooded my system, making my hands shake as I tucked it into the folds of my dress.

I reached for another. Then another.

“Well now…”

I froze. Declan was right behind me.

His hand slammed against the stone wall next to my head, pinning me there. His other hand caught my waist, bulling me back against his chest.

“You really can’t help yourself, can you?” he murmured.

I hated the mark. I hated how my body reacted to him even while my mind screamed to sunf

“You excite me, Emily,” he said, his voice dropping to a low growl against the side of my neck. “Soon, we’ll take every territory on this continent. You and me.”

He didn’t wait for an answer. His mouth crashed into mine, the kiss rough and hungry. He was trying to claim me

to drown out my thoughts with the sheer force of his presence.

While he was distracted, my hands kept working behind his back. My fingers fumbled with the stone, snapping

another shard loose.

Focus, my wolf hissed inside my head. Don’t let him win.

Declan’s lips moved down my throat, and a wave of pleasure hit me so hard I almost dropped the stones. I forced my shaking fingers to shove the shards deeper into my dress

1:20 pm PPTM.

Then, a sharp edge sliced into my fingertip.

I flinched. A thin line of blood appeared where the crystal had cut me.

Declan went perfectly still. His eyes snapped to my hand, and the second the scent of my blood hit the air, the atmosphere in the cavern changed. It went from heavy to lethal.

“What’s that?”

I jerked my hand away, my heart hammering against my ribs. “You shoved me into the wall,” I snapped, trying to sound angry instead of terrified. “It’s your fault.”

Declan stared at the drop of blood for a long time.

Then, slowly, he gripped my wrist and brought my bleeding finger to his mouth. My heart hammered against my ribs when his tongue brushed over the cut.

The second he tasted my blood, everything changed.

His eyes turned pitch black. All that was left was hunger. Pure, terrifying hunger.

“Emily,” he whispered, the sound vibrating deep in his chest. “I’m starving for the moment our blood finally tangles and there’s no line left between us. I’ll be inside your head, little wolf–I’ll hear your every thought, and my wolf will finally claim yours.”

The way he said it made a chill run down my spine. Then, without warning, every crystal in the cavern began to

glow brighter.
