Chapter 146
Emily’s POV
Glass crunched beneath my knees.
Rain poured from the sky so hard it blurred everything around me. I knelt in front of the crashed car. It was
ipside down.
I saw a little child. It was me. Little me. I was trapped in the back seat.
Tiny hands covered in blood pressed against the shattered window while terrified sobs echoed through the wreckage. The sharp, heavy smell of gasoline burned my nose. My father was dead. The driver beside him, too.
And outside–screams. Growls. The sounds of guards and rogues fighting.
Then I saw her. My mother.
Her body lay twisted against the crushed roof, blood dripping down her forehead while one shaking hand stretched desperately toward the child version of me.
“Emily…” she whispered weakly. “I’m sorry.”
Everything inside me fractured.
“Mama…” The word came out as a broken gasp.
Little Emily cried hysterically in the back seat while my mother tried to drag herself off the dented roof and
inbuckle the seatbelt.
I stumbled toward her. “Come on, hurry! Get out of there! Don’t leave me alone again!”
She froze. And then, slowly, her eyes lifted directly to mine.
Not at the child. At me. The adult me.
Recognition spread across her face.
‘…Emily?”
I couldn’t move. “You can see me?”
Tears filled her eyes. “My sweet girl…” Her voice trembled. “You grew up.”
I wanted nothing more than to curl up against her. But then she smiled weakly through the blood.
“Tell me… are you happy? Did you have a good life?”
The words turned my blood to ice. Happy? My breaths came fast and shallow.
“A good life?” I laughed, the sound sharp and unhinged. “You want to know if I had a good life?!”
1:41 pm P
My mother’s smile vanished.
“You left me!” I screamed, the fury of a decade bursting out of me. “Do you have any idea what happened to me
after you died?!”
Outside, another scream pierced the storm. Aggressive growls echoed from the woods. But the dam had broken,
and I couldn’t stop.
“You knew!” Tears blinded me, hot and fast. “You knew what I was! You knew what kind of life waited for me!”
Her face broke.
“I was tortured!” My voice cracked. “Marked by an enemy! Broken!” I stepped closer to the wreckage. “And now
I’m told I might never even have children with the man I love!”
My mother looked as if I had stabbed her. “Oh, Emily…”
“You left me alone through all of it!” I screamed.
Bitter anger filled me. I hated her for leaving.
“I’m so sorry, my sweet girl,” she cried. “I never wanted this suffering for you. I wish everything was different.”
Behind us, little Emily cried louder. My mother dragged herself toward the back seat and forced her trembling fingers against the buckle. Click.
Little Emily fell hard onto the roof of the car with a sharp cry.
My mother shoved the damaged door open with her last bit of strength.
“Take her and run.”
“No!” I screamed, reaching for her again. “I’m not leaving you again!”
Outside–the fighting stopped.
The chaos vanished from the forest all at once. Every instinct inside me turned ice cold. My mother felt it, too. Pure fear filled her eyes.
“…He’s here.”
The entire atmosphere shifted. And then, I saw him.
Silas.
He looked younger. Stronger. Healthier. But he was still just as horrifying. He stepped calmly through the downpour, walking past the bodies littering the road.
Dead guards. Dead rogues.
Everything inside me turned over.
1:41 pm P PTM
“RUN!” my mother screamed.
Power erupted from her body. Silver light flared across the wet ground in violent circles. The rain seemed to drag in the air, and leaves stayed suspended mid–fall.
Even Silas’s movements slowed down, his limbs heavy as if he were forcing himself through deep, thick water.
The ground trembled beneath the white waves spreading outward from my mother.
“Go!” she screamed toward little Emily.
The child version of me stumbled away, sobbing as she scrambled into the dark forest.
Silas pushed harder against the invisible pressure pinning him down. Annoyance crossed his face.
My mother’s body shook violently, blood spilling past her lips. But the white tide around her only grew brighter,
creating a dense, protective barrier around the car.
“You will not touch her!”
Silas took another step forward, breaking through the heavy air. Slowly.
A sharp scream cut through the air.
My mother and I both snapped our heads toward the sound. Out of the tree line, a man lunged forward, violently grabbing little Emily from behind.
I recognized him. It was Ryan’s father.
“I got you, little wolf,” he sneered.
Little Emily thrashed and screamed in his grip.
“NO!” my mother shrieked, every ounce of her strength leaving her.
Silas crossed the remaining distance in seconds. “You failed,” he said calmly.
He drove a silver dagger with a red ruby into her chest.
White light ripped violently from her body–her power, her entire life force, draining away.
A raw, primal scream tore from my throat. The agony in my chest exploded, and my own power flared to life. White–hot energy surged out of me, a blinding wave of fury meant to incinerate him, to tear him to pieces-
But the blast went right through Silas. It didn’t even make his cloak flicker.
This was just a memory. I couldn’t save her.
My voice broke completely. “No, please…”
1:41 pm P
Right before my eyes, the rot on Silas’s skin vanished. His flesh smoothed out, and his wrinkles erased themselves. He looked even younger now.
Ryan’s father dropped to one knee. He couldn’t even look at the monster he had just helped.
“The agreement still stands, Rogue King?” his voice shook.
Silas turned slowly, rolling the ruby dagger between his fingers. He looked at the man as if he were nothing but an nsect. “As long as you remain loyal. And your son after you.”
The Beta swallowed hard, nodding quickly. “Of course.”
“The Alpha is dead. You are no longer a Beta,” Silas said, stepping past him without a backward glance. “Take his lace. Claim this territory.”
My mind spun as the ugly truth slotted into place.
No.
It wasn’t a tragic rogue attack. It was a coup. Ryan’s father had traded my family’s lives for a crown.
“And the girl?” the Beta asked carefully, glancing over at little Emily as she sobbed in fear. “What do we do with
her?”
Silas didn’t even look back. “…Nothing.”
“But her mother was powerful,” the Beta argued nervously. “You saw what she could do.”
Silas smiled faintly. It was cold and cruel. “You dare question me?”
The Beta dropped his gaze.
“Powers like that rarely awaken twice in a single generation,” Silas said smoothly. “Most likely, the child is,
lothing.”
Nothing.
“Watch her. If abilities awaken… or if she becomes a white wolf…” His expression darkened. “Then inform me.”
Another figure stepped out from between the trees. Varga. A sick feeling rose in my throat.
“Erase the child’s memory,” Silas ordered.
Varga smiled, and blinding silver light flooded the forest.
I bolted upright, a sharp gasp tearing from my throat.
The forest vanished. The rain stopped. My whole body was shaking as the nightmare broke.
‘Emily!”
1:41 pm
I blinked, realizing I was already in Nathan’s arms. He held me tight against his big, muscular chest. He looked completely pale with panic. “What happened? What did you see?”
My fingers dug into his shirt.
“I saw them die,” I choked out my voice breaking. “They were betrayed, Nathan.”
‘What?”
“All my life…” I whispered, fresh tears burning down my cheeks. “Everyone told me the crash happened because of me. That somehow it was my fault. But it wasn’t.”
Nathan stared at me, waiting for me to continue.
“It was Silas.” Rage cut through the grief inside me. “And Ryan’s father, They planned it. They killed my father ind my mother to steal her power.”
Nathan didn’t say a word, but cold fury rolled off him, heavy and suffocating.
“Maybe leaving Ryan in Declan’s dungeon was the right decision after all,” he said, his tone icy.
“Nathan…” I looked up at him quickly. “I don’t think Ryan is responsible for what his father did.”
Nathan let out a sharp breath through his nose.
“Emily.” He spoke quietly, his gaze locking onto mine. “You’re still too willing to believe the best in people after verything they’ve done to you.”
“He was just a child too-”
“And children grow into their fathers.”
The words cut deep, and he knew it. Nathan paused, exhaling slowly before running his fingers through my
angled hair to soothe me.
“…Tell me about your mother’s power.”
r
1 swallowed hard, forcing myself to focus on the memory. “It felt like a wave, Like the air itself became heavier round her. Everything slowed down. Even Silas struggled to move through it.”
Nathan stared at me.
“And now I can feel it inside me, too,” I added, looking down at my shaking hands and new runa forming on my
land.
His expression darkened. “That kind of power could stop armies of rogues.”
Nathan didn’t want me sitting on the cold floor anymore. He scooped me up into his arms, lifted me onto the bed, and sat down right beside me. Carefully, he reached out and took my hand in his.
I could feel how nervous he was.
Earlier this evening…” His thumb brushed slowly across my knuckles. “When you spoke to the priestesses…”
Warmth rushed into my face.
“You said you loved me.”
My pulse skipped a beat. Nathan’s eyes searched mine, watching for any sign of hesitation. He looked almost
cautious.
“…Did you mean it?”
For a split second, I wanted to laugh. This man could command entire kingdoms without a trace of fear–but my
answer absolutely terrified him. I reached up, touching his face softly.
“Of course I meant it.”
For a moment, he just stared at me as if he couldn’t believe the words were real. Then his gaze softened into something raw and beautiful.
Then I leaned closer, resting my forehead against his.
“Now it’s your turn, Alpha King…” I whispered against his skin. “Do you…love me?”
