I went into my room, locked the door and took out my phone to return Jace’s call. He’d called when I was in the car with Caden. I was fortunate the phone had been on silent so Caden didn’t notice.
“Jace. Sorry I was busy.” I moved to the window, sure to keep my voice low.
He asked about my day and we had a lighthearted exchange.
He went to the reason he called. “You said you wanted to see the kids one last time, right? After this, you’re never going to risk coming to the Capital again p>
Joy bloomed in my chest. “Yes. Yes. Just this once p>
“You need to promise me, Lyric p>
“I promise, Jace. I’ll let them be after this p>
There was a short pause. “Fine. Maddy is taking them to the water park tomorrow. Two p.m p>
I inhaled deeply, my hand on my chest. “Oh, Jace. You have no idea how much this means to me. Thank you. So much p>
“It’s fine p>
“Um… Jace,” I tucked some strands of hair behind my ear. “How are things between you and Kael p>
His delayed response made me know they still hadn’t fixed things, and it wounded me.
“He’s still being an ass. Haven’t been able to see him for the past few weeks p>
“H—have you tried going to see him p>
“Last time I went, he claimed he was too busy p>
The guilt doubled on my conscience. Jace’s relationship with Kael hit rock bottom after he ran off with me. Kael was hurt he didn’t tell him he was running off and felt Jace didn’t value their relationship.
I was sincerely hoping they’d fix things. Why did I always ruin the lives of everybody around me?

“Look, it’s fine, Lyric. Don’t worry about it. I probably need some time off as well,” he said it like he meant it, but I knew Jace well enough to know he’d never been happy with anyone like he’d been with Kael.

I had no idea why Caden would choose today of all days to hold an outrageous meeting. I was aware he’d scheduled a meeting before now with his Alphas, but he only just told me this morning that I’d have to be in attendance when I absolutely didn’t want to.
There were certain things I needed to hurriedly do at the office before going to the Capital to see the kids one last time. This meeting might serve as a major delay.
I kept tapping my foot under the table, my mind lost even though I was seated among the Alphas with Caden by my side.
A part of me was actually curious to know what this was about. It wasn’t very often he called for such meetings.
He went first with the formalities, thanking them and even me for coming. It was unnerving each time he put on this fake gentleman act in front of them.
“I must say I’ve been impressed with the growth of our world so far. What started off as a little dream has gradually become a whole new world. None of this would be possible without your contributions and efforts…” Bla bla bla.
He went on and on to tell them more of the things they wanted to hear. Only I knew in this situation, something they wouldn’t want to hear was on the way.
Finally, he dropped the bombshell. It started with Corey, his right-hand man, sharing a document on the table to each Alpha, including me.
