Chapter 491
At the gates of the Russell family estate, the sleek black SUV came to a smooth halt just as both Gracie’s and Valeria’s phones buzzed in unison.
A notification from Erik appeared on their screens: “I’ve decided to travel overseas for some much-needed rest. There’s no cause for concern—I’ll return once I’ve unwound sufficiently.”
Almost immediately, their devices vibrated again with a flurry of follow-up texts.
Aiden replied, “Have a wonderful trip. We’ll manage all affairs back home perfectly. Rest easy.”
Theo said to Erik, “Prioritize your health and stay connected with everyone.”
Erik added, “I’ve entrusted your grandpa’s ongoing issues to all of you now. Age is catching up, and I can no longer bear the constant strain.”
Exchanging a pointed glance laden with mutual skepticism, Gracie and Valeria recognized the underlying seriousness reflected in each other’s expressions.
Without delay, Valeria initiated a video call to Erik, but it was swiftly declined.
A fresh message arrived promptly. “I’m seeking true solitude right now. Kindly respect my privacy and refrain from further interruptions. I’ll power off my phone throughout this break—no attempts to reach me, please.”
Valeria let out a sharp, derisive laugh. “If not for the family’s reputation, it would suit everyone fine if he stayed gone permanently.”
Gracie studied her screen thoughtfully. “The timing is suspiciously convenient—the family discussion wrapped up barely an hour ago, and suddenly these reassuring updates flood in. Their coordination is remarkably swift. Frankly, I doubt Father composed even these brief notes himself.”
“For now, let’s proceed inside to visit Mrs. Russell,” Gracie suggested calmly. “At the very least, Erik’s life doesn’t seem at immediate risk. He might endure some discomfort, but nothing more severe.”
Valeria harbored little sympathy for Erik’s plight; her primary worry centered on Brayden’s well-being. In truth, a prolonged absence from Erik would relieve her considerably.
The two women stepped into the Russell residence.
Cathie rested quietly on the bed, her body drained of strength. Nearby stood a beautifully crafted bassinet cradling her newborn daughter, who slumbered peacefully, her features delicate.
“You’re here at last,” Cathie murmured weakly, attempting to prop herself up until Valeria gently pressed her back down.
“You’ve only just delivered—conserve your strength,” Valeria insisted warmly. “Now, be direct: what prompted this invitation today?”
Cathie’s gaze shifted to Gracie with profound gratitude and regret. “Word reached me about the events that day… Without your quick thinking, Gracie, neither my baby nor I would have survived the delivery complications. You’ve helped us yet again.”
“In that crisis, Mrs. Russell, any compassionate person would have acted similarly. While I bear no fondness for Delia, you and your innocent child deserve no blame. I would never direct my resentment toward you,” Gracie replied modestly.
Cathie released a weary breath. “Gifford’s drastic threats left us cornered, forcing our reluctant consent to his union with Delia. Rest assured, though—even after Delia enters our household, she will neither stir conflict nor leverage our resources against your family.”
A household staff member adjusted a supportive cushion behind Cathie for greater ease. “My husband has resumed oversight at the firm. Post-wedding, he’ll curtail Gifford’s authority significantly, relegating him to a standard managerial position.”
This revelation caused both Gracie and Valeria’s eyes to widen in astonishment.
“Aren’t you concerned this could spark serious rifts within your own household?” Valeria’s brows drew together in disbelief. “Or is this some elaborate facade aimed at deceiving me? Blood ties run deep, after all.”
“I know full well how to prioritize what truly matters.” Cathie met her gaze steadily. “Gracie has proven herself an invaluable ally to our family, while Delia has relentlessly antagonized her. Though Quentin and I have stepped back into retirement, we’re far from oblivious to the world outside.”
Turning earnestly to Gracie, she added, “The Campbell Group has faced mounting difficulties this past year. Should you seek any form of retribution, the Russells will remain entirely neutral.”
Gracie blinked in surprise, unprepared for the conversation to veer into such territory.
After all, Delia remained the woman Gifford cherished deeply. By adopting this position, the Russells were effectively sidelining their own son.
