Sophie cocked her head and took her time, then replied, “Alright, let’s say you were. Tell me, what did you do about Daisy p>
Adrian went stiff, words stuck on his tongue. Daisy was barely a minor celebrity. There was no real reason for him to handle her himself.
Still, how was he supposed to explain this to Sophie? No way could he admit he had never met Daisy, that all he had done was quietly squeeze her out until she backed down.
“You never saw her, did you?” Sophie said, a sly smile tugging at her lips. “Daisy actually messaged me today. She said if I talk you into going to her alone, she might just cut me some slack p>
“Oh?” Adrian turned to her, the hint in her voice catching his attention. His lips curved, slow and amused. “So that’s where you draw the line. No trading your husband for your career p>
Sophie lifted her chin, a flash of pride in her voice. “Of course. Daisy can keep on dreaming. I’m not that easy to rattle p>

Sophie’s cheeks turned rosy. She pushed him away with a huff. “Don’t talk to me like I’m a kid p>
She rose onto her toes on purpose, stretched out her hand, and tousled Adrian’s hair while mimicking the way he spoke. “You made the smart choice too. You stayed away from her and didn’t try anything shady behind my back. I have to say, that’s pretty impressive p>
Saturday rolled in, and with it a rare break. Sophie picked out a breezy dress, dabbed on a bit of makeup, and checked herself in the mirror.
When he saw this, Adrian’s eyebrows shot up and his voice took on a playful edge. “So you finally remembered we’re overdue for some alone time? Give me a sec and I’ll change into something less boring p>
She hurried for her bag and shook her head. “No, that’s not it! Miss Crawford asked me to go with her to a jewelry show p>
Adrian’s smile dropped. “You get a day off, and you’re spending it with an outsider instead of me p>
With hands folded and an apologetic look, Sophie said, “Sorry. Rain check? Next time it’s all you p>
On her way out, Sophie barely paused. She shouted over her shoulder, “She’s already here waiting! I’ve got to run p>
She was gone before Adrian could get another word in, flying through the doorway like a burst of sunlight.
Now the living room felt hollow, and Adrian’s expression turned stormy as he watched her disappear.
Downstairs, a low-slung sports car idled by the entrance, polished and gleaming.
From behind the wheel, Angie rolled down her window, calling out, “Sophie, this way p>
With a quick jog, Sophie hopped in and settled into the passenger seat, a hint of sheepishness in her voice. “You really didn’t have to come pick me up, Miss Crawford. I could’ve just grabbed a cab p>
Angie offered a warm smile. “Don’t worry about it. I had some spare time, and it’s not out of my way p>
Her gaze rested on the fancy building. “You’ve got a place here? Must be pricey p>
“It’s just a rental,” Sophie answered, waving it off.
Angie dropped the subject, but inwardly she mulled it over. Renting in such a posh area wouldn’t come cheap. Even if Sophie worked for Pinnacle Jewelry, Angie couldn’t picture her splurging on a luxury apartment.
She had heard the stories—Sophie was raised by relatives who hadn’t given her much kindness. They had even arranged her marriage to Adrian, who had been cut off by the Knight family and left to fend for himself.
Supposedly, Adrian had nothing to his name, and Sophie was left footing the bills for them both. Angie couldn’t figure out how Sophie could afford it all. Questions kept circling in her mind.
The more time Angie spent with Sophie, the more she saw someone focused on her craft, living simply and never chasing after the spotlight. Getting to know her should have been easy. But when Angie put someone on Sophie’s trail, she was startled to find skilled bodyguards shadowing Sophie wherever she went—so skillful that even Sophie seemed unaware of them.
That discovery made Angie rethink everything. She called off the tracker, worried things might get complicated, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone powerful had Sophie’s back.
