Chapter 91
Chapter 91:
When lunch break rolled around, Sarah showed up with her lunch box in hand and dropped herself into the seat next to Sophie with all the subtlety of a storm.
“What on earth was wrong with you?” she demanded, sipping her juice through a straw, her brows pulled tight. “You texted me, ‘I’m sick,’ then went completely silent. Wouldn’t answer my calls, wouldn’t let me visit. What was that about p>
Sophie hesitated, then figured there was no point hiding it anymore. She told Sarah the whole messy story, from the supposed kidney donation to discovering the truth about Selah.
By the end of it, Sarah nearly sprayed milk across the table.
“What?” Her voice shot up several decibels. “You were actually going to donate a kidney and didn’t think to mention it to me p>
Sophie quickly waved her hands in panic. “Keep it down! I didn’t tell you because I knew you’d stop me p>

“Of course I’d stop you!” Sarah snapped, glaring like Sophie had lost her mind. “How could you even think about hiding something that serious from me p>
She huffed, then suddenly remembered something else and slapped the table. “And that impostor… don’t even get me started. Honestly, it’s a blessing she isn’t your mother p>
“Huh?” Sophie was taken aback.
“Remember that little cake she baked for you last time?” Sarah leaned closer, tapping her finger on the table for emphasis. “You gave me a slice, and the moment I tasted it, I knew it was familiar. It was just like the cakes from a bakery near my place p>
She quickly scrolled through her phone and held up a photo. “See? I even bought one to compare. Exact same taste, exact same packaging. She didn’t bake it—she bought it p>
Sophie froze, too stunned to speak. So it wasn’t that nobody had noticed. Everyone had, but out of kindness, no one had said a word.
Sarah realized she had hit a nerve and backtracked, awkwardly patting Sophie’s arm. “Hey, don’t let it get to you p>
She cleared her throat and switched gears. “But from what you told me, your husband’s been sticking close these past few days? Sounds like he really stepped up p>
Sophie responded with a nod, a smile appearing on her face.
“Well, well,” Sarah drawled, shaking her head with mock disbelief. “Turns out you really see a man’s true colors after you marry him. Looks like you landed yourself a rare gem p>
Sophie stirred her soup absentmindedly, but in her mind, Adrian’s words from earlier looped over and over again.
“He—” She bit down on her lip, suddenly bashful. “Can you tell me more about the gossip you’ve heard about him? From before p>
She remembered hearing bits and pieces about Adrian in the past, the kind of wild stories people traded like entertainment. Back then, she had laughed them off, never imagining the man in question would end up being her husband. But now, she found herself actually curious.
Sarah paused mid-bite, giving her a look. “Are you sure you want to hear it p>
She shifted uncomfortably. It felt strange to praise Adrian one second and then air out his old dirt the next.
“What I know is just gossip,” she admitted carefully. “But, well, most of it’s about his love life. He had quite a few girlfriends back then. And, um… let’s just say he didn’t always date them one at a time p>
The second the words left her mouth, Sarah winced and quickly waved her hand as if to snatch them back. “Forget I said anything. Honestly, it’s ancient history. You don’t need to know p>
Sophie’s lashes trembled as she blinked, but her expression didn’t give much away. She lowered her eyes and spoke softly. “It’s fine. I can take it. That was all before… before us p>
Her voice was calm, like she was commenting on something that didn’t really matter. But deep inside, a tiny spark of jealousy curled in her chest.
Meanwhile, Sarah, completely unaware of the storm Sophie was holding back, leaned in with eager curiosity. “Oh, wait. Remember I told you one of our coworkers used to date him? Want me to call her over so you can grill her p>
