Chapter 51
Chapter 51:
Sophie played with her fork, then muttered aloud, “I keep wondering if our elusive founder is actually from Dranland too p>
A flicker of something crossed Adrian’s face. He almost pressed her for her opinion on the mysterious boss, but Sophie was already shoveling food with renewed determination, barely glancing up.
He held his tongue, pouring a glass of water and placing it within her reach, just in case she started to choke from eating so quickly.
Within moments, her plate was empty. She set her fork down and pushed back her chair with a grin. “All done! Don’t wait for me p>
Before he could get a word in, she was halfway to the study. Pausing in the doorway, she rubbed the back of her neck, sheepish. “Deadlines are calling… Mind handling cleanup? I promise I’ll make it up to you next time p>
Adrian just watched her disappear, his eyes falling to the meal he had spent hours preparing.
All that effort, and she was gone in a flash.

He wiped his mouth and let out a quiet laugh. “Unbelievable woman p>
The following morning, Adrian called Ted Walton, head of the Design Department, into his office.
Tapping his fingers on the desk, Adrian fixed Ted with a cool stare. “Is your team overloaded right now p>
Ted blinked in surprise and quickly shook his head. “No, sir! Everything’s on schedule. No one’s been forced to work late p>
The tapping stopped. Adrian’s tone turned serious. “Any problems with bullying on your team p>
Ted paled, mopping his brow with a handkerchief. “After what happened with Lila Thorpe, we installed an anonymous complaint box, just like you asked. Things have been smooth—no trouble at all p>
Ted swallowed hard, the low drone of the air conditioning filling the silence where conversation had failed. He stood rigidly straight, clearly waiting for Adrian to pass judgment.
After a long pause, Adrian finally spoke. “That’ll be all p>
Ted felt a wave of relief wash over him, as if he had just dodged a bullet. He offered a hurried bow and shuffled backward, nearly catching his heel on the carpet before making it out the door.
As soon as the door latched, Simon—sprawled out on the office couch—burst into laughter. “So, is this your way of checking up on your wife, Adrian p>
He gave his coffee mug a lazy swirl, eyes twinkling with mischief. “Don’t tell me you’re actually sulking because she’d rather work than spend time with you p>
Adrian shot him a look sharp enough to cut glass. “Keep talking, and I’ll have you stuck at Yada’s branch wading through their books next quarter p>
Simon immediately pretended to zip his lips, not daring another word.
Adrian leaned back in his chair, frowning in thought. If Sophie’s job wasn’t overwhelming, then what was really taking up all her time?
