The cab followed the red car all the way to the grand entrance of the Dream Hotel, one of the city’s swankiest hotels. Automatic doors glided open as the masked man, with his arm casually draped around Addie, strolled into the lobby, laughing and talking as if nothing else in the world mattered.
Sarah, fired up and ready for a showdown, grabbed Sophie’s wrist and made for the entrance. “If Adrian’s got the nerve to check in with her, we’ve got the guts to catch him in the act. Tonight’s the night he gets what’s coming p>
But Sophie couldn’t move. She stood rooted in place, cold all over, her fingers numb. “Maybe… I should give him a chance to explain p>
Taking a shaky breath, she unlocked her phone. The first thing she saw was a message from Adrian, sent just thirty minutes before: “I’ve got a work dinner tonight, might not be home until late. Don’t wait up—have dinner without me p>
Those words on the screen stung, but Sophie couldn’t stop herself from typing out a question: “Where are you right now p>
Adrian’s reply arrived almost instantly: “At the Raven Hotel, dinner meeting with clients. The truffle foie gras is great tonight—I’ll bring some home for you. Don’t eat too much on your own, okay p>
But the reality was clear—she had just seen him walk into the Dream Hotel, not the Raven Hotel. The lie came out so effortlessly.
She stared at the soft, caring message. He sounded attentive, thoughtful, perfect. How could he keep up the act so easily? Telling her she was the only one while strolling into a hotel with someone else. Even now, he fed her gentle words while he was busy betraying her.
Amy’s warnings echoed in her mind, and all at once, Sophie saw how right she had been. This was just who Adrian was, and nothing would ever change that.

Behind the desk, the receptionist greeted them warmly. “Good evening. May I help you with a reservation p>
Sarah leaned in, barely hiding her impatience. “The man who came in wearing a mask—could you tell us what room he’s in p>
“I’m afraid I can’t share that information. It’s a matter of guest privacy,” the receptionist answered, her tone polite but firm.
Sarah’s frustration bubbled over. “Guest privacy? He’s in there cheating on his wife! The woman with me is his real wife, and we’re here to catch them red-handed p>
The receptionist kept her professional smile, though curiosity flickered in her eyes as she studied them.
“I’m truly not allowed to say anything,” she replied. “But—” She lowered her voice and leaned in. “I’m just stepping away for a bathroom break. If someone happened to glance at the monitor while I’m gone… especially the upper-right where room numbers are displayed… well, I can’t control that p>
“Of course, we wouldn’t dream of it,” Sarah said, struggling to look innocent.
With a knowing nod, the receptionist walked off, leaving the desk unattended.
Wasting no time, Sarah and Sophie leaned over the computer screen. The guest list was open and clear: Addie Hinks, Room 1561.
