Sophie’s eyes fixed on the man, disbelief tightening her features.

He seemed slow-witted, his words and actions childlike, yet his face bore the lines of someone much older than her. There was no way he could be a child born after Zola had left her.

Her voice trembled as she turned sharply toward Zola. “What is happening here p>

Zola’s lips curved into a smile that looked forced, her tone shaky. “Sweetie… I’ll explain later, alright p>

But the man grew frantic, clutching Zola’s arm with desperation. “Mom! You told me I was your only child p>

“Yes, yes.” Zola rushed to calm him, stroking his arm as if soothing a child. “Of course you’re my only child. Be good now, and let the nanny take you home. I’ll come soon p>

“I’m not going!” He dropped onto the floor, wrapping himself around her leg and kicking up a tantrum. “If I leave, you’ll just go be someone else’s mom! They told me you even changed your name and put makeup on so you could pretend to be their mom instead p>

“Enough!” Zola’s face went white, and she tried to smother his words with her hand.

But Sophie was already moving. She seized the man by the shoulders, her voice taut with urgency. “You said she changed her name? What was it before p>

“My mom’s real name is Selah Dixon!” he answered with naive honesty. “Do you want her phone number too? I can tell you p>

Shock ripped through Sophie, her eyes widening as though her entire world had collapsed in a single instant. She turned stiffly toward the woman, her voice unsteady. “You’re not… you’re not really my mother, are you p>

Selah forced a calm front, masking her unease. “He’s not right in the head. Don’t take his nonsense seriously p>

But Sophie was already moving. She bolted into the bathroom, drenched a towel until it dripped, then stormed back and pressed it hard against Selah’s face.

Selah recoiled, her voice rising. “What do you think you’re doing p>

She tried to wrench herself free, but Sophie’s grip held firm, her fury lending her strength. As the fabric scraped across skin, streaks of foundation smeared away, revealing features that did not belong to the woman Sophie had trusted.

The face still carried a trace of resemblance, but the spirit, the very presence, was completely wrong. Whatever hope Sophie had clung to disintegrated.

“You’re not my mother,” she said, her words trembling yet carrying a cold, deliberate weight.

Adrian’s words sliced across hers, steady and merciless. “If you understand the law, then you should also understand that identity theft, half a million dollars in fraud, and nearly tricking my wife into organ donation will put you behind bars p>

Selah’s complexion drained to gray, her mouth trembling as her eyes darted between Sophie and the guards. With a loud thud, she fell to her knees.

Her voice broke as she clutched Sophie’s legs. “Sophie, please, I was wrong! I have a son—he’s mentally disabled and can’t survive without me. If I’m thrown in prison, what will become of him? I swear I never meant to harm you p>
