Chapter 38
Chapter 38:
All of a sudden, he wondered what she was up to at that very moment.
“Hey, earth to Ryan! Buddy, what’re you thinking about? Come on and drink with us!” Kane slapped him chummily on the shoulder.
Ryan snapped out of his daze. Suppressing his uneasiness, he downed his drink in one go.
“Sorry, the number you have dialed is not in service p>
Meanwhile, Jenessa stared at her phone, listening to the robotic voice on the other end. Each passing second felt like another piece of her hope breaking apart.
Ryan wouldn’t even answer her calls anymore? Did he hate her that much? Jenessa recalled how quickly Ryan had left after receiving Maisie’s call. She guessed maybe the two were in the middle of something “intimate,” which would explain why Ryan refused to come to the phone.
Despair clouded Jenessa’s vision, and the intense pain in her belly soon caused her to black out completely.
In the ethereal dreamscape, she felt as though she was floating in an endless void. Faint echoes of pained cries rang in her ears. Lost and helpless, she wandered aimlessly forward, driven by a single goal — to find the source of the cries.
Suddenly, a child, covered in scarlet, sticky blood, came into view. The child’s features bore both her and Ryan’s features.
In a hoarse voice, the child cried out feebly, “Mommy! Everything hurts! Why didn’t you save me? Why didn’t you fight for me, Mommy p>
The baby’s innocent words slashed through Jenessa’s heart like a knife.
Jenessa shook her head wildly, desperately wanting to explain to the little one, but no words came out.
“No!” The intense agony jolted Jenessa awake.
Startled, the doctor beside her quickly leaned in and asked with concern, “Ma’am, how are you feeling p>

Seeing the figure clad in a white doctor’s coat brought Jenessa back to reality. She anxiously grabbed the doctor’s arm, her voice tense as she cried, “How’s my baby? Is it okay p>
The doctor paused for a second, then gently laid a hand on her shoulder, saying soothingly, “Please try to calm down p>
But to Jenessa, the doctor’s efforts to calm her only served to further intensify her anxiety, her face turning as pale as a ghost.
“Does this mean… my baby is p>
Seeing the light in her eyes about to shatter, the doctor hurriedly reassured her, “Don’t worry! The baby’s fine. But to avoid any complications, it’d be best if you could keep calm p>
Relieved to hear that her baby was safe, Jenessa finally managed to calm herself down.
“Oh, thank God! Thank God!” She kept repeating herself, feeling a wave of relief wash over her.
Taking a deep breath, she composed herself and thanked the doctor sincerely.
“I can’t thank you enough, Doctor p>
The doctor smiled and advised, “Although your baby is fine now, you still need plenty of rest. Be sure to take your medications on time, okay? I’ll give you a prescription before you’re discharged p>
Jenessa readily agreed, promising, “As long as it’ll keep my baby safe, I’ll do whatever it takes p>
After completing all the discharge formalities, Jenessa left the hospital. But as she stepped outside, several police officers suddenly blocked her way.
“Jenessa Wright?” one of the officers asked.
“That’s me,” Jenessa answered meekly, nodding in confusion. She hadn’t had a chance to call the police yet, so why were they already here?
