Chapter 388
Chapter 388:
The kitchen soon buzzed with the sounds of chopping.
From his spot on the sofa, Ryan watched Jenessa bustling about. Her silhouette against the warm kitchen lights painted a cozy scene that unexpectedly warmed his heart.
In that moment, confusion overtook him. Jenessa was so caring. How had he failed to appreciate her efforts throughout their three years together? Was he blind, or was it true that people only value what they had lost?
A wave of regret swept through him, and he sighed deeply.
Needing a moment to gather himself, he stood and headed to the bathroom to splash water on his face, hoping it would help clear his mind.
Returning to the living room, he took the opportunity to really look at Jenessa’s new home. Despite having recently moved in, she had managed to infuse the space with her touch. The walls were adorned with an array of paintings and decorations. A cabinet displayed various household essentials, and nearby, a vase with fresh lilies added a touch of life. Everything was neatly arranged, creating an unmistakable sense of home.
As Ryan’s gaze swept over the details, his heart, long shielded by a tough exterior, softened completely. A gentle smile played on his lips, and his eyes softened, reflecting a newfound tenderness.
After admiring the surroundings, he settled back onto the sofa. His attention was drawn to the coffee table, cluttered with cups and a medical kit. As he began to tidy up, something else caught his eye, altering his expression in an instant.
Meanwhile, after some flustered efforts in the kitchen, Jenessa had prepared a sandwich. She was just about to offer it to Ryan and check if he needed anything else when she noticed him examining an item.
Her heart raced, and her mind raced with thoughts.
It was the prenatal education book that Brinley had given her some time ago!
She had packed it when she moved and had been reading it on the sofa just a few days ago, forgetting to put it away afterward. Now, Ryan had discovered it!
Jenessa’s panic was palpable. She momentarily stopped breathing. Setting the sandwich down quickly, she rushed over and snatched the prenatal book from Ryan’s hands. Sweat glistened on her forehead from the nervousness that overtook her.
“What right do you have to go through my things?” she demanded, her tone sharp and angry.
She clutched the book behind her back, her expression fierce yet betraying the turmoil within. What was she to do now? Ryan had seen the book. Could he possibly guess the truth?
Ryan’s gaze was analytical as he questioned her, “Why are you reading a book like this p>
Those brief moments had given him enough time to recognize its subject. He was neither blind nor foolish. What reason could a single woman like Jenessa have for keeping a book on prenatal education?
As her heart raced, Jenessa struggled to maintain her composure and retorted, “I can read whatever I like. It’s not your concern p>
Better yet, she shouldn’t have let Ryan into her home the previous night. Then none of this would have unfolded.
Ryan, however, wasn’t convinced by her explanation. He remained skeptical and pressed further, “You don’t have a child. Why would you need this kind of book p>
After a brief pause, a sudden realization dawned on him. Feeling an unusual suspicion, he instinctively glanced at her stomach and tentatively ventured, “Could it be that you p>
Could Jenessa be pregnant? Could the child be his? They had only recently divorced, and their last intimate encounter had been just a few months ago.
