Chapter 67
Chapter 67:
Confusion crossed Maisie’s face.
“Is there an event tonight that requires a companion p>
“Yes, there is a party, but I’ve chosen my companion already. I’m taking Jenessa,” Ryan stated plainly.
Maisie was utterly dumbfounded by Ryan’s words, as though a bolt of lightning had struck her.
“What? Jenessa?” she asked, her voice dripping with disbelief.
Her face reddened with fury, and her tone became sharp.
“Why does she have the right to go to the party with you p>
Ryan looked up, his face a mask of confusion.
“What’s wrong with Jenessa, my secretary, accompanying me to an event p>
Catching the questioning look in Ryan’s eyes, a flutter of panic stirred in Maisie’s chest.
She quickly checked her rising anger but remained steadfast in her opposition.
Pausing to gather her thoughts, she pressed her lips together and then said softly, “Ryan, tonight’s party will host leaders of the industry. Isn’t it unsuitable for just a secretary to attend such a prestigious event p>
Then, her voice softened, taking on a coaxing tone.
“I should be your companion, being the closest woman to you. I’ve heard the other executives will be there with their wives p>
Ryan’s brow creased slightly, and he cut her off.

“Maisie, it’s exactly because the event is so important that I need someone like Jenessa, who is seasoned in these matters. And about bringing wives—you do remember that Jenessa is still my wife, right p>
Maisie’s words caught in her throat. Since her return to the country, she had viewed herself as Ryan’s rightful partner.
Suddenly, she felt like the outsider, starkly reminded of her place.
“But… But…” Maisie stammered, her cheeks burning with embarrassment and irritation.
“Enough, Maisie. I’m swamped right now and buried under a mountain of paperwork. If there’s more to discuss, it can wait until I’m free. For now, please leave,” Ryan stated, his impatience evident in his tone.
Reluctantly, Maisie turned to leave.
Just as she reached the door, Ryan added, “By the way p>
Her heart surged with hope. Had he reconsidered? Was he about to ask her to the very party?
But her hopes were dashed as he continued, “In the future, don’t come to my office without an appointment. It’s inappropriate p>
Maisie was staggered by his statement, nearly losing her poise.
She took several deep breaths to calm her rage and maintain her composure before Ryan.
After exiting the office, a storm brewed across her face. Why was an appointment necessary for her to see Ryan when Jenessa had free rein?
As she made her way out, she overheard snippets of conversation from the staff.
“I heard Jenessa is going with Mr. Haynes to the event tonight p>
