Chapter 60
Chapter 60:
“This entire debacle stemmed from Maisie’s actions. She might not have intended for any of this to happen. I wanted to set things right and hopefully make amends on her behalf p>
His words fell like a bucket of ice water on Jenessa’s head. Her smile turned sardonic, and a self-deprecating glint entered her eyes.
Of course, it was for Maisie. At the end of the day, everything that Ryan did was all for Maisie.
The thought turned Jenessa’s heart cold.
They stood in silence for a moment until Ryan noticed that Jenessa’s nose was turning red.
“Have you been paying attention to the weather these last few days? Why are you wearing so little outside? Aren’t you cold at all?” His concern was evident in his tone and the furrowing of his brows.
Only then did Jenessa feel the biting chill that seeped into her bones. She shivered slightly.
She had rushed out the moment she received the call from the police, not even bothering to grab a coat, much less check the weather.
“You’re not a child anymore, you know,” Ryan chided her.
“Do you have to be reminded to take care of yourself every single day?” He took his coat off as he spoke and draped it over her shoulders.
Jenessa stiffened at the gesture. Ryan’s scent lingered on the coat, as well as the warmth from his body. It enveloped her like a huge, comforting blanket. Within seconds, she was all warm and toasty.

“Keep it on,” Ryan said softly.
“We can’t have you catching a cold p>
Jenessa pressed her lips into a thin line, unsure of how to feel about this development.
After some hesitation, she bit the bullet and asked, “Do you actually care about me, Ryan p>
Ryan gave her a look as if to ask her if she had lost her mind.
“You’re my wife. Of course, I care about you p>
Jenessa’s heart started racing again, but this time, it was wrapped in a coil of resentment.
Ryan always did this to her—hurting her with his callous words one moment, then switching over the next to treat her like she was the most important person in the world to him.
Well, he had finally done it one time too many. She refused to go through yet another emotional rollercoaster.
Jenessa took a deep breath to brace herself before stepping back, effectively putting some distance between them.
“I won’t be your wife for much longer anyway. We’re getting a divorce soon, then we’ll no longer have anything to do with each other p>
The corner of Ryan’s eye twitched. He gritted his teeth in frustration. Why did she keep on bringing up their impending divorce? Was she that desperate to be free of him?
A moment of tense silence passed between them.
“As it stands, we are still married,” Ryan said at last, his tone coming off a little harsher than usual.
“And I intend to fulfill my duties as your husband until the day we finalize our divorce p>
Jenessa started to tell him it was unnecessary, but Ryan abruptly cut her off.
